Zine # 3

Wracking my brain for a zine/blog title. I am terrible at this sort of thing but was trying to link the idea to aspects of Levenshulme in some way. Initial ideas included;

The Zine with no Name (a play on 'the street with no name')
Levy Lyve (Levy Life but an anagram of Levy)
Levyzine
Levenzoom (taken from an internet page explaining how to pronounec Levenshulme)
Levenzine

Other potential areas for exploration;

SJ875945 (the OS Map reference)
M19 (postcode. But also the name of a bar in Levenshulme)
1909 (the year Levenshulme became part of Manchester)
53.447°N 2.187°W (the co-ordinates)

I liked the idea of just using numbers, but realised that would be too obscure - people would not pick up the zine and recognise something in the title. Many of the text titles I came up with felt quite cheesy.
Sara suggested a three-letter name, inspired by a post on Facebook where Levenshulme residents were jokingly inventing three-letter names for shops in the area. Given that much of the later project was built upon this Facebook group (finding subjects, getting information about the area etc) it seemed fitting that the inspiration for the title would also come from here.

LVY
(a shortened version of 'Levy', the affectionate name for the area)
LEV
(the first three letters, but also the train station reference)
LVE
(using letters from the name, this also makes me think of 'live' and 'love')
LVS
(the first letter of each syllable of the name)

After much consideration, I have decided on LVE as the title, with the strapline of 'Live. Love. Lev'

Zine # 2

All images and text have been passed to Sara for experimentation with layout. Following a meeting about the design, it was decided that;

  • The zine must fit onto 2 lengths of A3 paper (the maximum size at the printers for double-sided printing)
  • The zine will probably be portrait (subject to experimentation by Sara)
  • Therefore, the zine will be 14 pages long (7 double sided pages) as one page from each length will be used for attaching the two halves together

A3 Page
split into 8 sections (two lengths of concertina booklet)

  • The paper for printing needs to be quite thin as the zine will become very thick once folded
  • The front page will contain a title (with or without images)
  • The back page will contain contact details for myself, Sara, Peter and any campaigners who want their website etc to be printed)
  • Each publication of the zine will be dedicated to a specific campaigner. The first zine is going to be 'Jamie' as he was the first person I interviewed and I have also conducted most experimentation on his images.
  • Other people/images/text etc will feature in the zine but it will be primarily focused on one person
  • The zine needs either a very clean, minimal look or a cluttered feel. The general feeling was that cluttered would suit the topic of Levenshulme, as it is such a busy high street.

This was a reshoot with Helen, as it was too bright at the market for the first shoot. This time was much better, as Helen was more comfortable and less distracted by the market and I was able to work with the available light.

I interviewed Helen again in order to obtain up to date information about the market.
